While Ghana has a great reputation, I must admit that navigating the country can be tricky if you're not familiar with certain things. This Ghana travel guide contains tips and everything you need to know to make the most of your trip.

Brief History to know about Ghana

Ghana was formerly known as the Gold Coast due to its abundance of gold as a natural resource. The country gained independence in 1957 from colonial rule led by visionary Kwame Nkrumah, becoming the first Sub-Saharan African nation to do so. This milestone set the tone for Pan-Africanism and unity within the region. Today, Ghana is known for its vibrant culture, strong democracy, and role as a leader in West Africa. Its history reflects resilience and a constant push for progress, making it a fascinating country with an inspiring story.

Helpful things to know before visiting Ghana

The capital city is Accra

Time zone  Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)   the time in Ghana is the same throughout the year, always aligned with GMT. Its 3 hours behind  Kenyan time.

Language spoken English is the official language of Ghana, . However, many other languages are spoken across the country. The most widely spoken indigenous languages include Twi (Akan), Ewe, Ga, and Dagbani, among others. These languages reflect the diverse ethnic groups in Ghana, and each region may have its own predominant language.

Currency Ghanaian Cedi GHC. Use currency inverter to see how much your local currency is worth in Cedi's. Cash is widely accepted in Ghana so make sure to change some cash at the Kotoka International Airport.

Visa requirements for Ghana 

This will depend on your nationality and the agreements Ghana has with your home country, but for Kenyans we don't need visa to travel to Ghana . you only need your yellow fever card and a passport.

Buying Flights to Ghana 

The cost of a flight from Kenya to Ghana typically ranges between 70,000 and 80,000 KES on average, and can go as high as 100,000 KES depending on the season. However, you can often find better deals by booking your flight on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The flight duration from Kenya to Accra is approximately six hours, and I traveled on a direct flight with Kenya Airways (KQ). Be sure to choose your arrival airport wisely.

Where to book accommodation in Ghana

When looking for accommodation in Ghana , it can be difficult to find places outside of Accra so I would recommend using booking.com for short stays and and Airbnb for longer stays. 

Best Areas to stay in Accra

You can search for stays in these areas when you are in Accra East Lego( this is the area where I was staying ) ,West Legon, Osu, Labone and Airport residential areas . these areas are known to be secure , clean and quite but also expensive as they are home for wealthy Ghanaians.

Best time to visit Ghana 

 The best time to visit if you are looking for a lively atmosphere and want to enjoy the festivals Detty December is the perfect time when concerts happen everyday and partying and clubbing is all day and night.  But for a more relaxed trip with ideal trip , plan for the dried season from November to March. However best time to travel on a budget is April to October during rainy seasons .

Language and word phrases commonly used in Ghana 

Ghana is a multilingual country and if you are staying in Ghana for more than four days these are the few phrases you will come along

How long should you stay in Ghana and a Budget for a trip in Ghana

You can spend anytime from 4 days to months in Ghana . It all depend with your itinerary and budget. I stayed in Ghana for 6 days and I was able to explore almost everywhere in Accra. I spend almost 100 ksh because I was travelling on a budget and I had booked my flight 3 months earlier be4fore I travelled and that made my flight ticket very affordable. I would therefore suggest 7 days and above if you want to experience Ghana outside of Accra.

Ghanaian culture and customs

Dress code While modern clothing is widely worn , traditional attire is important for special occasions such as weddings and funeral 

Proper etiquette like greetings  are taken very seriously 

You should use your right hand when giving or collecting items from anyone.

When in presence of older people , your hands should be out of your pockets

Moving around Ghana

Moving around Accra is fairly easy with various means to use which include:

Uber is great for comfort and convenient it just operates the same way in Kenya as long as you have the app.  You can also use TukTuk which are perfect for short quick trips and its very affordable. Minibuses is also another option for longer distances at a affordable prices.

Food delivery in Ghana

There are few apps you can use to order for food in Accra and its so convenient just like in Kenya, thse apps are Jumia food, bolt food and uber eats.

Activities To do in Accra

If you're in Ghana, there are several exciting activities to enjoy.

1. visit Jamestown, a historic area in Accra known for its colonial architecture . Take a walk along the beach, explore the local markets, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the famous lighthouse.

2. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. This park is dedicated to Ghana’s first president and offers a peaceful place to learn about the country's history. You can see his tomb, a museum, and some beautiful gardens around the area.

3. Legon Botanical Gardens is a must-see for the nature lovers. It's a great place to go for a peaceful walk, enjoy the greenery, or have a picnic with family and friends. The gardens also offer activities like canoeing and canopy walk.

4. Makola Market. It’s one of the busiest markets in Accra, where you can find all sorts of products, from clothing to fresh produce. Be ready for a lively and colorful atmosphere.

5.The Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, is a symbol of Ghana’s freedom. It’s a spacious area where you can see the Independence Arch and the Eternal Flame. It’s also a good spot to take photos and enjoy the open space.

6.Craft Market, where you can find handmade items such as jewelry, clothing, and art. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs that represent Ghanaian culture.

7.The 1957 Art Gallery at the Kempinski Hotel offers an interesting collection of contemporary African art. You can appreciate beautiful paintings, sculptures, and other artworks, and maybe even take home a piece for yourself.

8.Braiding your hair - when planning your trip to Ghana don't stress about braiding your hair before traveling. Instead , braid your hair in Ghana. They do the nicest braids ever . I got my braids done in Ghana, and they were the best braids I've ever had. I kept them in for two months and they were still neat even on the day I took them off.

Best beaches to visit in Accra

Accra has several great beaches to explore such as ;

1. Labadi Beach is popular for its lively atmosphere and activities such as horse riding , acrobats .

2. Kokrobite Beach offers a more relaxed vibe with good surf. 

3.Bojo Beach is known for its serene setting and clean surroundings. 

4.Sakumono Beach provides a quiet spot with great views and  Teshie Beach which is ideal for those looking for a peaceful retreat by the sea.

Safety Tips for visiting Ghana and petty theft in Ghana

1.Be aware of your surroundings  at all as Accra is a hustling city just like any other cities.

2.Try to have the windows down when you are in Taxis and uber

3.Always keep your bag Infront of you while walking and hold it tightly especially  in public places or crowded areas.

And about the petty theft just like any other major cities , pickpocketing is highly expected so you should always zip up your bag and be careful.

1. Accra Mall – Popular shopping center with a variety of stores, food courts, and entertainment options.

2. Westfield Mall – A modern mall offering fashion, electronics, and dining experiences.

Final Thoughts on Ghana

Reflecting on Ghana, I am impressed by the country's rich cultural heritage,   The people  in Ghana are welcoming starting from the airport  and they are  so lovely.  There's a clear sense of pride in Ghanaian traditions and history. The mix of modernity and tradition makes it unique  and Ghana is my favorite country to date and if you are planning to visit Ghana soon I have no doubt that you will enjoy the country and your trip will be one to remember.

Zanzibar is located in the Indian Ocean off the Eastern Coast of Africa. The Island of Zanzibar is known for its rich history, vibrant culture and stunning natural beauty. Its perfect destination for anyone seeking a mix of historical exploration , relaxation on immaculate beaches , and immersion in the Islands unique culture.

The main language spoken is Swahili and English is also commonly spoken especially in tourists areas , hotels and businesses.

Climate and Weather in Zanzibar

Zanzibar has a tropical climate , with warm temperatures throughout the year . The climate is divided into two main seasons;

Dry season (June-October)

This period is considered the best time to visit Zanzibar. Expect warm and dry weather with temperatures ranging from 25 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. The skies are clear , making it ideal for outdoor activities and sunbathing. I visited in July and the weather was great.

Wet Season( November to May) 

This season is characterized by the short rains from Nov to December and long rains from March to May.

How to get to Zanzibar

1. By Air (Flight)

The most convenient and quickest way to get to get to Zanzibar is by air .Zanzibar has its own airport called Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. 

There are direct flights from Nairobi to Zanzibar on a daily basis .These flights typically take 1 hour to 1 and a half hour. The airlines include Kenya Airways, Air Tanzania, Fly 540 and Precision air which is currently having a valentine offer of 11000ksh to Zanzibar. 

There are also flights from Mombasa to Zanzibar. These flights are cheaper and shorter usually around 45 minutes .Airlines like Jamb jet flies there daily and the price is 14000KSH. I used Jamb jet which was half the price of KQ.

2. By Bus and Ferry (Land and Sea Combo)

If you're up for a more adventurous journey and would like to experience the landscape and travel overland, you can take a bus and ferry combination. 

From Nairobi or Mombasa to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania):

• Buses: Start by taking a bus from Nairobi or Mombasa to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The journey from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam typically takes 14-15 hours, while from Mombasa, it takes about 69-10 hours.  Several bus companies operate along this route, including Mash Poa, Modern Coast, and Tahmeed coach. The charges from Nairobi is 4500ksh and from Mombasa is 2500ksh.

From Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar (Ferry)

• 
  
• Once in Dar es Salaam, you can take a ferry to Zanzibar. The ferry ride is scenic and usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. There are various ferry companies that operate this route, such as Azam Marine and Sea Star. Ferries run from 6a.m, 10a.m ,12a.m ,14p.m and the last one at 16p.m.  It's best to book tickets in advance during peak travel times. They charge 35usd for outsiders.

Travel Tips:

• Visa: Kenyan citizens do not require a visa to visit Zanzibar (Tanzania), but make sure your passport is up to date and valid for at least 6 months.
• Currency: The currency used in Zanzibar is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), so you may need to exchange your Kenyan Shillings or carry US dollars (widely accepted).
• Health Precautions: Make sure you have your Yellow Fever vaccination.

How to move around Zanzibar

By Taxi -Taxis are widely available across Zanzibar, especially in major areas like Stone Town, Nungwi, and Kendwa. They offer a convenient, comfortable, and direct way to travel around the island.

Daladala

For a more local experience and a budget-friendly option, consider using Dala Dala, the shared minivans that serve as public transport across the island. They are colorful, often packed, and can be a fun way to see the island while interacting with locals. This was my main means of transport while I was in Zanzibar.

 By Boda Boda (Motorcycle Taxis)

If you're traveling solo or in pairs, Boda Bodas (motorcycle taxis) can be a quick way to get around Zanzibar. They are great for navigating through traffic or for reaching remote areas where larger vehicles can’t go.

 By Car Rental

If you want the freedom to explore at your own pace, renting a car is a great option. Zanzibar offers several car rental agencies, and renting a vehicle gives you flexibility to reach more remote beaches and inland areas.

By Bicycle

Renting a bicycle is another eco-friendly and enjoyable way to move around Zanzibar, particularly if you're exploring areas like Stone Town or the northern beaches. Many hotels and guesthouses offer bicycles for rent.

 By Boat (For Island Hopping)

Zanzibar is surrounded by smaller islands that are worth visiting, such as Prison Island, Mnemba Atoll, and Changuu Island. Boats are the main way to travel between these islands.

Tour guides

If you're looking for a more comfortable and organized experience, you can book a private tour or a transfer service. These tours often include transport to various attractions like spice farms, beaches, or wildlife reserves, along with a local guide.

Pro Tip ; Bargaining is allowed and very common practice in the island, so make sure to negotiate the price especially for motorbike or Taxi.

Don't forget to bring your sunscreen as well, light clothing, and a camera to capture the mesmerizing beauty of Zanzibar. Also be sure to stay hydrated as the tropical heat can catch you off-guard.

Where to Eat in Zanzibar

While in Zanzibar I was staying in Nungwi beach and these are the few places I managed to dine in while I was there.

1. Mama Mia Restaurant – If you are looking for a  popular spot offering delicious Italian dishes, particularly seafood, with a beautiful view of the beach and nice cocktails then this is the right place for you. You can even watch live acrobatic performances at the beach.I absolutely love this place.

2. The Jetty Restaurant – Located on a scenic jetty overlooking the Indian Ocean, it offers a variety of fresh seafood and international cuisine, perfect for a sunset dinner.

3. Amaani Beach Bungalows Restaurant – This beachfront restaurant is known for its tropical vibes, serving both local and international dishes with a focus on fresh seafood.

4. Langi Langi Beach Bungalows Restaurant – A cozy spot with a relaxed ambiance, offering Swahili-inspired dishes and fresh local seafood right by the beach.

5. Zanzibari Restaurant – Specializing in traditional Zanzibari dishes, this spot offers a unique blend of spices and fresh ingredients, perfect for those looking to experience local flavors.

6. Zanzibar street food;

An affordable way to eat on the island is by enjoying street food, which is very tasty, clean, and always fresh because the food is cooked right in front of you. This is especially great for breakfast and lunch, and it's as cheap as $1 or even less. I used to eat a lot of street food, and I still miss it to this day. If you ever travel to Zanzibar, don’t forget to try their chips mayai (chips and eggs mixed together), mahamri (sweet fried dough), and viazi (fried potatoes) in the morning. For lunch, try some fried chicken with salad.

Pro Tip:   Another budget-friendly accommodation option for those traveling on a budget is Airbnb, which is very affordable on the island. During my stay in Zanzibar, I stayed in an Airbnb for just $25 per day, and it was a lovely place, very close to the beach. You can either book through Booking.com or inquire directly with the owner.

As my time in Zanzibar comes to an end, I can’t help but feel grateful for this unforgettable adventure. The island is not only safe, but the people here are incredibly warm and welcoming, always ready with a smile. One thing you'll notice is the beach boys charming, smooth-talking locals who can easily sweep you off your feet with their sweet words. But don’t be fooled, they’re part of the island's unique charm. Zanzibar’s beauty is beyond just the beaches it's the people, the culture, and the unforgettable moments that will stay with you long after you leave. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE TRAVELLING TO RWANDA // RWANDA TRAVEL GUIDE.

Rwanda is  located in East Africa , it is known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," Rwanda has breathtaking landscapes, rich wildlife, a resilient history, and a culture that is very vibrant. From bustling Kigali to the serene shores of Lake Kivu, Rwanda is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. If you’re seeking an adventure that combines nature, history, and warm hospitality, Rwanda should be at the top of your travel list. The official languages spoken are Kinyarwanda, French and English. Kinyarwanda is the most widely spoken language, with the majority of the population using it in daily life. They also speak basic swahili and the official currency is Rwandan Franc (RWF). I have visited Rwanda in both June and October and the weather was perfect. There is one hour time difference between  Rwanda and Kenya.

How to get cash in Kigali.

You  can  withdraw money from an ATM   at the airport or any other bank around the city, use  Mpesa if you are from Kenya, or exchange your local currency for Rwandan Francs. You can also easily obtain a local SIM card, as long as you have your passport. Wi-Fi  is widely available, making internet access simple . Also please note that  plastic bags are not allowed in Rwanda, and the country is known for its cleanliness.

Getting Around Kigali.

There are various transportation options for getting around ;

1.Moto taxis (Boda Boda)- This a quick way to get around the city . They are available allover Kigali and you will see them near bus stations, busy streets or waiting at designated spots. You can negotiate the fare before getting on and make sure you wear helmet.

2.Kigali Bus Service-the buses are the best option if you prefer a budget friendly to travel around the city. it is perfectly  structured and tickets are available at bus stops and you can also buy a tap and go smart card for regular rides.

3.Yego Cabs- If you want a more comfortable and private  way to get around the city you can go for this option, it is similar to uber but specific to Rwanda. You must download the Yego cab app from the app store or Google play .

4.Motorcycles (Motos)-This is also another common way to move around especially for short distances.

Where to stay in Kigali.

When choosing accommodation in Kigali, consider factors such as proximity to attractions, amenities offered, and your budget. The city is known for its safety and cleanliness, making it a welcoming destination for travelers. Here are some of the best neighborhoods that cater to different needs; Nyarutarama,  Ramera,  Kimironko,  Kacyiru ,  Gacuriro and Nyamirambo. Normally when I visit I stay in Nyarutarama at Adriel Homes(+250795008925) they are very affordable with excellent services.

Where to eat in Kigali.

Kigali offers a wide variety of dining options, ranging from local Rwandan cuisine to international dishes. Here are some of the  places to eat in Kigali; Jolof of Kigali, this  was my favorite spot to eat in Kigali , it offers authentic West African cuisine in Kigali and I highly recommend this place ,another spot  is  java which is  very similar to a Kenyan one, Fulani restaurant which is  very stylish with both indoors and outdoors sitting area and so comfortable, Atelier De Vun it has cozy and intimate atmosphere with art pieces. Its an ambience environment for dinner. Other spots are Inika restaurant for steak and good Dining, Alink restaurant which offers  both Chinese and Korean Cuisine and it is very affordable with big portion, Mac caffe mostly for fast food and lastly Kisimenti area that has lively social atmosphere with numerous eateries, bars and cafes and very affordable.

Things To Do in Rwanda.

Rwanda offers a diverse array of experiences ranging from wildlife adventures to cultural activities. Here’s a list of activities you can enjoy in this beautiful country

THE FUN OF TRAVELLING BY ROAD FROM KENYA TO RWANDA AND BURUNDI THROUGH UGANDA

This is an adventure that takes you through three different countries, each with its own unique feature. The trip offers an opportunity to experience the beautiful landscapes of East Africa.  Here's a guide to help you plan your journey and make the most out of your bus trip.

WHAT TO PACK

your passport, yellow fever card, a warm jacket and something to cover up yourself with in a bus at night in case it get cold . You will also need snacks and water, and don't forget your power bank or charger. you can easily charge your phone in the bus.

WHY  DID I   CHOOSE A BUS FROM KENYA , RWANDA AND BURUNDI

Taking a bus from Kenya to Rwanda offers several advantages. It's one of the most affordable ways to travel across the region and allows you to witness the scenic landscapes of East Africa in a more immersive way. The journey also provides an authentic travel experience, giving you the chance to interact with locals and fellow travelers. Its  also a good trip for those traveling on a budget.

PLANNING YOUR ROUTE: KENYA TO RWANDA VIA UGANDA

The bus ride from Kenya to Rwanda typically passes through Uganda, so you'll have the chance to explore three countries in one trip. Here’s a breakdown of the route and major stops. The journey starts in Kenya, and there are several bus companies such as Simba Coach , Modern Coast and Trinity bus. I used trinity bus which I highly recommend, they charge 7000ksh and its very comfortable, clean ,the seats are reclinable, have a television to watch and a charging port. They also keep time and before the bus take off, there's a pastor who prays . 

Note : Book your bus ticket in advance and keep time , be at the bust station at least 30 minutes before time. Their stage is in downtown Nairobi at a place called Duruma road. The bus typically leaves in the afternoon at 2 o'clock or in the evening.

CROSSING INTO UGANDA

The bus will head towards Uganda after leaving Kenya. The trip usually takes around 8-10 hours depending on the route and the number of stops. The first stop is in Nakuru town in Kenya for like 15min, the second one in Kisumu and the third one at Malaba town at the boarder as the bus cross into Uganda. 

AT THE BOARDER:

• Prepare for custom checks: you will need to show your passport and your yellow fever card which is a must here.
• Currency exchange you can change some Kenyan shillings for Ugandan shillings or Rwandan France as this will be the local currency.
•  Stretch your legs -Take a moment to stretch and relax before continuing your journey.

As you travel through Uganda, keep your camera handy for some amazing views. You will see beautiful landscapes with green hills and forests. Uganda has a natural beauty.

ENTERING RWANDA

After Uganda you will continue your journey towards Rwanda .The drive from Uganda to Rwanda in Gatuna boarder can take around 8-9 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. 

AT THE RWANDA BOARDER

•  Prepare for another boarder check- Have your passport ready, have a proof of accommodation in Rwanda (they are so strict about this), know how long you will be staying in Rwanda and also your itinerary incase your are travelling as a tourist . Make sure you don't have any polythene bag in your luggage.

From Gatuna boarder in Rwanda you will continue with your journey for 1 hour unto your Final destination in Kigali at the main bus station called Nyabugogo. Once you arrive in Rwanda you will notice the cleanliness and safety .Also there is a change in landscape, you will see rolling green hills everywhere which Rwanda is known for hence the term "Land of a thousand hills". 

A DAY TRIP TO BURUNDI

Rwanda is very close to Burundi, another beautiful country in East Africa. If you are interested you can take a quick day trip to Burundi from Rwanda. The trip is only about 1 to 2 hours away by taxi . You can get a taxi at the Nyabugogo bus station.

• Make sure you have your passport . It's visa free for Kenyans. The process is similar to the other boarders. We mainly went their to try some of their local foods.

TIPS FOR A SMOOTH JOURNEY IN THIS TRIP

• Travel Light- Long bus ride can be tiring , so pack right and make sure you have all the essentials : passport, money, snacks, water and a warm jacket.
• Keep your valuable safe-Always keep your money passport , laptop and important items in a small bag you can carry around and fit where you are sited.
• Be patient- This journey can be long and sometimes unpredictable depending on the bus you are using. Traffic jams, road conditions and boarder delays can add time to your trip so plan accordingly.
