Rwanda is located in East Africa , it is known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," Rwanda has breathtaking landscapes, rich wildlife, a resilient history, and a culture that is very vibrant. From bustling Kigali to the serene shores of Lake Kivu, Rwanda is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. If you’re seeking an adventure that combines nature, history, and warm hospitality, Rwanda should be at the top of your travel list. The official languages spoken are Kinyarwanda, French and English. Kinyarwanda is the most widely spoken language, with the majority of the population using it in daily life. They also speak basic swahili and the official currency is Rwandan Franc (RWF). I have visited Rwanda in both June and October and the weather was perfect. There is one hour time difference between Rwanda and Kenya.
How to get cash in Kigali.
You can withdraw money from an ATM at the airport or any other bank around the city, use Mpesa if you are from Kenya, or exchange your local currency for Rwandan Francs. You can also easily obtain a local SIM card, as long as you have your passport. Wi-Fi is widely available, making internet access simple . Also please note that plastic bags are not allowed in Rwanda, and the country is known for its cleanliness.
Getting Around Kigali.
There are various transportation options for getting around ;
1.Moto taxis (Boda Boda)- This a quick way to get around the city . They are available allover Kigali and you will see them near bus stations, busy streets or waiting at designated spots. You can negotiate the fare before getting on and make sure you wear helmet.
2.Kigali Bus Service-the buses are the best option if you prefer a budget friendly to travel around the city. it is perfectly structured and tickets are available at bus stops and you can also buy a tap and go smart card for regular rides.
3.Yego Cabs- If you want a more comfortable and private way to get around the city you can go for this option, it is similar to uber but specific to Rwanda. You must download the Yego cab app from the app store or Google play .
4.Motorcycles (Motos)-This is also another common way to move around especially for short distances.
Where to stay in Kigali.
When choosing accommodation in Kigali, consider factors such as proximity to attractions, amenities offered, and your budget. The city is known for its safety and cleanliness, making it a welcoming destination for travelers. Here are some of the best neighborhoods that cater to different needs; Nyarutarama, Ramera, Kimironko, Kacyiru , Gacuriro and Nyamirambo. Normally when I visit I stay in Nyarutarama at Adriel Homes(+250795008925) they are very affordable with excellent services.
Where to eat in Kigali.
Kigali offers a wide variety of dining options, ranging from local Rwandan cuisine to international dishes. Here are some of the places to eat in Kigali; Jolof of Kigali, this was my favorite spot to eat in Kigali , it offers authentic West African cuisine in Kigali and I highly recommend this place ,another spot is java which is very similar to a Kenyan one, Fulani restaurant which is very stylish with both indoors and outdoors sitting area and so comfortable, Atelier De Vun it has cozy and intimate atmosphere with art pieces. Its an ambience environment for dinner. Other spots are Inika restaurant for steak and good Dining, Alink restaurant which offers both Chinese and Korean Cuisine and it is very affordable with big portion, Mac caffe mostly for fast food and lastly Kisimenti area that has lively social atmosphere with numerous eateries, bars and cafes and very affordable.
